Quatuor Coronati

Cloister of Santi Quattro Coronati, Rome · CC BY-SA 2.0

Quatuor Coronati is the premier Lodge of Masonic research in the world.

Founded in 1884 and consecrated in 1886, the Lodge brought to the history of Freemasonry an approach founded on facts, which replaced the more imaginative works of earlier writers, and it became known as the “authentic school” of Masonic research.

Quatuor Coronati shares its research and encourages scholarship through the Quatuor Coronati Correspondence Circle, the QCCC, the first and oldest society of Masonic research in the world, founded almost 140 years ago. Wherever you are, from America to Europe, India, Asia, Australia and New Zealand or anywhere else in the world, you are welcome to join as a member of the QCCC. It is an international community, and the QCCC is open to all.

Its research resources hold a collection of important Old Charges and Masonic manuscripts, the early minutes of the Grand Lodge of England (the “Moderns”) and the early minutes of the Grand Lodge of England according to the Old Institutions (the “Antients”).

The Lodge provides a complete list of the papers published in AQC from its foundation to the present day, a set of indexes to all past volumes of AQC, links to past issues of AQC that are no longer in copyright and can be downloaded, and many other sources of further information. Members of the QCCC benefit from a personal research service.

Research resources

The principal resource of Quatuor Coronati Lodge is AQC, the Transactions of the Lodge, published for almost 140 years. Its library, its other documents and its artefacts are kept at the Museum and Library at Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London, or are on loan elsewhere.

A searchable list of the papers and articles published in AQC is available here: AQC – Complete List of Papers and Authors, 1886–2024.

Indexing any journal is a continuing task, especially when the journal has been published every year for as long as AQC. The late Svend Aage Verdesø of Denmark compiled a working index of volumes 1–127 (1888–2014) in PDF, which can be searched with Acrobat Reader or used as an ordinary index. The Lodge hopes to produce a compact revised index of all the volumes of AQC in the coming years, if funding and volunteers allow.

A consolidated searchable index of all of AQC is available here: AQC Index 1–137.
